Team Quiz – 22 January 2008

This year’s quiz followed the usual format with five teams competing in the Elite Section and four in the ‘Racing Section’. Phil Brown fulfilled his usual roll of quizmaster and set competitors a tough task with eight rounds covering an even mix of flat and jump racing. Three teams played their joker on the first round on the 2007 Flat season and this proved a sensible choice for the Weatherbys team who managed ten correct answers and gained 20 points. Rounds on Nicky Henderson, flat race French invaders, the 2006/07 National Hunt Season, Sir Michael Stoute, Irish jump racing invaders and Royal Ascot followed.

The evening concluded with a round on the Cheltenham Festival which proved manna from heaven for the Cheltenham and Three Counties Racing Club team who got 11 correct answers and a wisely played joker resulted in a score of 22 and an overall round score of 81 just three points behind the winners of the Racing Competition, the Newbury Racecourse team (comprising Steve Dillon, Andrew Pennington, Alan Elks and Adrian Hunt).

The winners of the Elite Competition were the Racing Post Team of Graham Dench, Craig Thake, Lee Mottershead and Steve Dennis who scored a magnificent 97 points out of a possible 108 to win comfortably by a 15 points margin over the Raceform Team with 82 points. The WBRC Team of Brian Armstrong, Mark Chapman, Lester Whelpdale and Terry Knight finished fourth in this competition with 75 points.
Hopefully all who took part enjoyed it and will be back next year to renew rivalry.
